The Glory of Being An American - Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Bishop Sheen discuses the three glories of being an American.
The first glory of being an American is that our rights and liberties come from the Creator, from God and thus no one can legitimately take them away.
“The founding fathers wanted a county where the majority is the custodian of minority rights. … If we wish to keep our rights and liberties, we must also keep our God. Piety and patriotism go together.” ~ Fulton Sheen
The second glory of being an American is the value that we as a country in our founding documents give to the human person. We The People ordained the constitution. We The People are made up of persons with inestimable value and with rights who are self determining and irreplaceable.
“The greatness of America therefore is its belief in the value of a man.” ~ Fulton Sheen
The third glory of being an American is our relationship with the rest of the world. From our very beginning we have been a sanctuary for the persecuted peoples of the world. We became an arsenal for defending freedom around the world. We fought two World Wars and did not gain one inch of territory nor ask for it. We uplifted our defeated enemies. Then, we became a pantry to the world, sending food and supplies to those in need.
“I believe really and truly that we (America) are destined under Providence to be a secondary [call] for the preservation of the liberties of the world.“ ~ Fulton Sheen
