Prayer is the life blood of our relationship with God. Prayer is the spiritual air that we breathe because it is as vital to our spiritual life as air is to our physical life. Without a consistent devotion to daily prayer, we simply cannot continually grow in our relationship with God and live a spiritual life dedicated to discipleship.

There is no greater message from God: He is here, with us—and he is trustworthy.
Given the turmoil of the past six months, these words are difficult for some to accept. Quarantines, social distancing, illness of friends and loved ones, loss of employment, financial instability, political and social unrest, and the death of thousands as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have caused much suffering. In the end, though, our lives are defined by the journey from shore to shore and the tumultuous storms we encounter along the way. The call of each Christian is to find just who travels with us inside of that boat.

Hope is the virtue that expects God’s help. It places it’s trust in Him, looks to heaven as our final end, and waits patiently for His answer to prayers for help here in this life. Because hope anchors us in heaven it anchors us in God’s mercy, because without mercy we are without heaven. And, similarly, hoping in God’s help here on earth is also to ask for His mercy, because we don’t deserve His help here either. Without mercy no prayer is answered.

In a matter of two sentences, the Psalmist sums up a tremendously complex part of one’s journey of faith. At one moment, we can have a sense of certainty in the Lord, a perceived state of proximity to the divine that is so real that we can say, “I shall never be shaken.” Then suddenly, everything changes. It seems as though everything that we had once felt with such certainty is wrenched away and we are left with nothing in a state of confusion.
